MANTIQUEIRA

Mantiqueira,  its name originated from 'Amantikir' and means "mountain that cries." These mountain range of eastern Brazil, rising abruptly from the northwestern bank of the Rio Paraíba do Sul and extending northeastward for approximately 200 mi (320 km), reaching a height of 9,255 ft (2,821 m) in the Pico (peak) das Agulhas Negras.

On the Minas Gerais State side of the Mantiqueira Mountain Ridge (Serra da Mantiqueira) lies the Mantiqueira de Minas region. With a century of experience in producing quality coffees, the Mantiqueira de Minas region is currently one of the best-awarded regions in Brazil. Many of the Cup of Excellence winning coffees come from this region, year after year. In 2011, Mantiqueira de Minas received Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) due to its tradition and worldwide reputation for producing high-quality coffees. Coffees grown in this area typically have more complex profiles thanks to the (for Brazil) relatively high altitude and rich soil. There are 7800 registered coffee producers throughout the region, mostly growing coffee on small farms.

CAPARAÓ

Caparaó is a National Park that was crated in 1961 to protect the Caparaó Mountains, located on the border between Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states in Brazil. Pico da Bandeira, one of the highest mountains in Brazil, is located there.

The Caparaó region is rich in coffee history and has a great variety of terroir. In fact, you'll even find Brazil's third highest mountain, the Pico da Bandeira, here. The Espírito Santo part is mostly known for its production of Robusta, yet it also offers incredible flavor profiles for Arabica. The Caparaó region is rich in coffee history and has a great variety of terroir. On the east side of the mountain massif is more humid and the coffees are generally dried in greenhouses or in driers. The profiles are dominated by bright acidity and fruity flavors with a medium body and a sweet cup.

ALTO CAPARAÓ

Alto Caparaó is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. The city belongs to the mesoregion of Zona da Mata and to the microregion of Manhuaçu. It is necessary to emphasize that its origin is a natural mutation from 100%  Bourbon varietal thus explaining the high quality in the cup. It is of early coffee bean harvest and is perfect for higher elevation regions above 1000m. This variety is aimed at producing specialty coffees due to its excellent organoleptic qualities. It is recommended for dense plantations and fertile soils.

PIATÃ

Piatã, a town located between two mountain ranges, and close to Diamantina Plateau National Park, is the highest point in Bahia, at 1,400m above sea level. The high altitudes and temperatures that vary from 2°C to 18°C in the winter make Piatã a very unique and privileged coffee growing region in Brazil. The area is situated in the latitude 13º South, closer to the Equador line than the traditional coffee regions in Brazil.

All these factors, combined with the area’s rich soil and intensive care are favourable to producing high quality coffee. Renato, owner of Fazenda Vista Alegri, says that due to the climate, he is able to delay the ripeness process and that is the reason why his coffee is able to embody so many sugars.

This region is well known for its specialty coffee, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world. Coffees from Piatã have a cup profile that is very distinctive, bright and transparent. Other notes normally found are molasses, citric fruits, red fruits, intense aroma and high complexity.

The region started to gain international recognition since the 2009 Cup of Excellence, where half of the top 10 coffees were from there. In 2015 Cup of Excellence, the first and second place where also from Piatã. Last year, in the 2016 COE Pulped Naturals there was a complete dominance in the awards, an astonishing 19 out of 24 winning coffees came from the little town in Bahia!
